10K was forced to grow up much faster than any other kid in the world, even long before an outbreak transformed the world into an apocalyptic aftermath overtaken by zombies. His father had been a survivalist who'd settled in a cabin near a national park in upstate New York, always believing things would inevitably fall apart enough that people would have to know how to fend for themselves. Because of this, 10K was taught early on how to shoot, hunt, fish, and track, giving him an early preparation for what he'd have to face in the years ahead, and helping him to develop a kind of maturity that would pull him through in making tough decisions along the way, avoiding naivety in how he'd see the world and the survivors remaining in it. Despite often being the youngest of his companions, he carries a more realistic view of confronting things with skepticism and criticism, making his choices on what he believes would best enable survival for himself and those with him.
Because of the skills his father had taught him and the parting words he'd received — "I could always trust you to do the right thing" — 10K has always been more persistent in his survival and pushing forward even in the face of impossible odds. He'd first changed his name from Tommy to Ten Thousand (eventually shortened to 10K), signifying the number of zombies he aimed to kill, providing him a self-assigned mission to constantly motivate him to keep going. If he finds himself in a pinch, he'll often try to make do with whatever resources are immediately available to him, fighting against zombies with scattered things like billiard balls and fire extinguishers. When bitten by Murphy (the lone survivor of a zombie bite carrying the secret to a cure), 10K had been turned into a "Blend", a half-way point between human and zombie, able to be controlled at Murphy's will. Despite how easily manipulated other Blends had been, 10K proved to be more resistant to these demands, able to fight it quite frequently to maintain his own will, due to his own strong persistence at self-survival.
Though 10K was raised with the provided knowledge on how to take care of himself, travelling on his own for some time after he'd lost his father to a zombie bite, eventually he'd join up with a few fellow survivors on their own mission to find a cure to the virus, unintentionally gaining a new family in the process. Despite his tendency to be on his own, 10K isn't a stranger to understanding devoted loyalty, and even within the short time he spends with the team, he instantly becomes a reliable member, consistently having their back when they're in trouble. Even after nearly drowning in the Mississippi River, when his team all ends up on the opposite bank, 10K's main motivation is to reunite with them, despite all his capabilities of being able to maintain his survival on his own. Constantly noting that Doc, who had become his father figure, would never give up on looking for him, 10K maintains that he would continue to do the same. But someone doesn't need to be a member of his long-standing team for him to fight for them just as loyally; he's risked his own life to save other survivors he's found along the way on his journey, and has even once given up a freshly won and very valuable rifle to a girl and her father so that they had a better chance of survival even at the risk of lessening his own chances.
10K might be more than willing to help others if he can offer it, but due to his isolated upbringing, his interactions with strangers had been rather limited growing up, leaving him constantly unsure of how to actually maintain a conversation. This especially pertains to meeting girls, often sparking a physical attraction upon first sight which he isn't sure how to initiate further. Though he's since improved on his behavior, there was a time in which he'd simply follow behind them frequently in hopes of sparking some semblance of conversation; eventually, he'd grown more accustomed to vocal interactions, even if he still missed the mark several times, merely pointing out loose zombie body parts stuck in their hair or returning criticisms when mocked for the peculiarity of his own name. In time, he'd come to meet Red, who'd chosen her name to scare off men, and while they'd gone off to a rough start, their shared experiences of survival allowed them to resonate with one another, proving that understanding and support worked better for a lasting relationship than instant charm.
Still, one of his most prominent flaws is in how reserved it tends to be, having been forced to grow up so fast and start taking care of himself at only sixteen years old. Because of this, 10K have a habit of keeping his emotions buried inside. From the moment he first shared the story of having to pike his zombified father, he retaliated by stating what he had killed hadn't been his father at all, that it'd merely been his first kill, showing that his own mission of killing ten thousand zombies is his own way of trying to shut down remembering that they were once human, shielding the fact that his life is consumed with so much loss and death. Instead, 10K takes on the pressures himself, pretending that they don't bother him as much as they do, such as when he's forced to kill Cassandra, Murphy's first bitten Blend who eventually becomes more zombie-like than human. Despite his feelings for her, upon stabbing her, 10K tells the team not to try to make him feel better about it, that he'd prefer not to feel anything at all. In time, this insistence to "not feel" is what makes him eventually gives in to Murphy's control as a Blend, upon the realization that being a Blend means no longer feeling afraid.
While he'd had his feelings shut down for a time, eventually, the support of his teammates (along with getting killed and revived) revitalized one of 10K's true natures, which is that he does in fact have a sense of humor. Much of this side of him became inspired under the guidance of Doc, whose long years and lifetime experiences (and casual drug use) made him much more relaxed even in the face of the brutal apocalypse. With his positive attitude and hippie-loving antics, Doc's fatherly love for 10K helped the younger boy with embracing his more playful side, which tends to come with deadpan teasing of the others and lighter responses to darker trials. When faced with the possibilities that aliens are on the planet, 10K spends most of the time persistent on their existence, concerned more with trying to dig for confirmation rather than the danger in being killed by one. Even his relationship with Murphy, which had grown so antagonistic after everything that had occurred between Cassandra's death and becoming a Blend, had eventually lost its steam as 10K steered into a more playful bickering with the older man, choosing instead to give up his hardened demeanor toward the world and drifting away from his previous promises of eventually seeking to kill him.
Powers:
10K's abilities lie in his talents of survival, having been taught in the way of weapons, traps, and outdoor living by his father who raised him in a cabin in the wilderness of a national park in preparation for the world eventually needing to fend for itself. He's known to be an excellent marksman with almost flawless accuracy, and excels in fishing, tracking, and hunting.
